LC's European Vacation, Part 6- Portovenere and Cinque Terra

Sept. 15-17, 2008

Every once in awhile you get lucky... The choice of visiting Portovenere and Cinque Terra on the Mediteranean turned out to be the best decision we made. We loved it so much we decided to skip Florence and stay here another night.

This is downtown Portovenere, the town we stayed in. You couldn't find a parking spot for your car and here it seems not much room for a boat either.

We had great weather for a walk the first evening we were there.

At the tip of the peninsula, right up the road from town, we came to this very charming church

The next morning, we hopped on a boat to Cinque Terra. You can only get there by boat or train. The little church from the night before, as seen from the water

One of the villages. Cinque Terra, as the name applies, is an area inhabited by 5 small towns literally clinging to the cliff sides. Traditionally they were fishing villages, but now have become a bit touristy.

There is a walking path that connects all 5 towns. Looks a little skittish, LC, I thought we had fixed that problem

Another great surprise.... In a search for some souvenirs, we found this old winery. Stocked up on a few cases and hit the road home

Part 5- Colisseum, Roman ruins, and night pictures

Sept. 14, 2008

After our religious day at the Vatican on Saturday, we were ready to see some sights that involved the opposite, slaughter and blood shed. Just kidding, it was just the Colisseum and then the Roman ruins.

The Colisseum is quite impressive considering it was built in 72 AD

Inside of the Colisseum. The middle was covered in wood flooring and sand. That's were the fun was had.....

Underneath the flooring was kinda like the basement. This is where the gladiators got ready for the fighting and the animals were kept in cages

Near the Colisseum is the Roman Ruins. This is a very large area that has been excavated and made into a park for people to check out.

The steps of that same temple. The circle on the steps was for a game that children used to play in front of the temple

Outside of the ruins, we found the Pantheon. Built in 27 BC, as a Pagan temple. 2035 years old!!!

So, the ladies were miserable, but I forced them to revisit a few sights at night.
